Iowa Marriage License Information

ID Requirement in Iowa: Picture identification + Social Security information.

Iowa Residency Requirement: You do not have to be a resident of Iowa.

Previous Marriages: If previously married, the date of divorce or date of spouse's death must be supplied. If the divorce was within 60 days, a signed copy of the divorce decree will need to be shown.

Iowa Waiting Period: Three (3) business day waiting period.

Marriage Application

You may apply for a Marriage License at any County Recorder in Iowa as long as the ceremony is to be performed in Iowa.

To apply for a Marriage License, the bride, groom and one witness (all must be 18 years or older) must appear in person and present a photo identification; i.e., drivers license or state ID. The fee includes a certified copy of the Marriage Certificate. There is a three (3) day waiting period before the marriage license may be picked up and the marriage ceremony may be performed.

Once the Certificate of Marriage has been returned to the Recorder's Office and placed on record, a certified copy will be mailed to the bride and groom.

Application for Marriage License – you can obtain one at any county service center in Iowa; do a search for your local county and marriage license.
